Antique French Cast Iron Double Horse Head “Grattoir” Boot Scape, 19th Century

Description

A French grattoir, or scraper, this cast iron boot scraper from the 1800s has a double horse head (bicephalic) motif. At the end of the 18th century, when sidewalks first appeared in large cities, grattoir would have been embedded into the pavement. Unfortunately, these obstructions to walking areas were considered dangerous and a shift was made to place grattoir closer to building walls. During the 1800s and early 20th century, grattoir could be found in many large metroplexes.

Our model has a horizontal transom with a slight curve above the horse heads. This is the section that would scrape the soles of shoes and boots. The cleated foot would have been used for installation, whether in the grass or concrete. A brown and orange patina has developed to the black finish, adding charm to our French boot scrape. The perfect addition at a ranch or farm, the grattoir could also embellish the entryway of an urban dwelling.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Minor wear, commensurate to age and use, presenting as some oxidation.
