Repousse is a metalworking technique where images are hammered into metal from the inside. The process gives the imagery a raised presence, allowing the artistry to be fully appreciated. In the case of this brass umbrella holder from France, the metal depicts a Bacchanalian scene. Dating to circa 1900, the illustration features five putti with a large dog. One of the mischievous cherubs is riding the canine while holding a staff with a pinecone finial embellishment. The other four putti are involved in various forms of debauchery, adding to the merriment. A climbing grapevine can be seen in the background as the grouping treads across textured ground dotted with flowers and items of revelry, such as a tambourine, an ewer, and a staff.

The top is partially hooded, with a sprawling grapevine encircling a woven basket laden with gathered grape clusters. Several thin rings of molding adorn the opening as well as the bottom of the holder. Based on the grape motifs, it is quite possible that this was once used as a hotte, which is a basket used to gather grapes at vineyards. It would make a fantastic decorative accessory in a kitchen or bar area but can also be used in an entry hall or foyer as an umbrella holder.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor buildup, light indentations, and fleabites. Loss of paint to the interior.
