Description

Butcher blocks have been used in Europe for centuries, and as the name implies, they were traditionally found in butcher shops. A beautiful example is our butcher block table by Usines X. Aubert, which would have been found in a Dijon, France, boucherie around 1890.

The parquetry chopping surface, consisting of rectangular blocks, is nicely worn, showing its great use and age. An iron bullhead is affixed to the crest of the shaped back wall adorned with recessed molding, just above two metal slits that provide ample knife storage. Four thickly fluted spindle legs with ball feet support the robust top, which is also augmented by metal brackets, bolts, and wooden dowels. The apron is highly undulating and contains a single belt drawer with an angular metal pull. Above the drawer is a metal plate with the production mark: Material et Fournitures Usines X. Aubert Dijon. Our butcher block table from Dijon has a warm honey brown color and would make a fantastic prep table for any kitchen.

CONDITION: Good antique condition, with minor wood worm damage, necessitating old fills and repairs. Very light age separations. The back wall was recently strengthened by a woodworker.
