This highly pierced brass decorative element from France was originally the cover of a bassinoire from the 1600s. A bassinoire is a device where hot coals are inserted into a vented receptacle which is passed under sheets, warming a bed before use. These metal vessels would have been affixed to a long pole, allowing a person to use them without fear of burning themselves on the coals.
Our cut brass bassinoire cover is comprised of a rinceau of flowers surrounding a larger rosette. The center flower is surrounded by a banded vine arranged in a circle. Repeating X’s adorn the slightly rolled outer rim, with a recessed ring of repeating beaded niches immediately inside. The bassinoire lid has been mounted onto a black stand that swivels, allowing it be displayed as a decorative accessory in just about any room of the house.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition of the cover of a brass bassinoire from the 1600s. The lid has been mounted on a swivel stand more recently. Light verdigris to the verso side. Minor nicks and fleabites. Some faded elements, commensurate with age.
