97 Inch Tall Painted French Napoleon III Mirror with Crest, Circa 1850

Description

At over eight feet tall, this hand-carved and painted French mirror is truly remarkable. Dating to circa 1850, the beautiful mirror is from the period of Napoleon III (often referred to as Second Empire) and features Neoclassical motifs inspired by Louis XVI, which was common among Napoleon III furnishings.

The parcel-painted frame has hues of cream, gold, and gray. All four corners have angular projections that give the rectangular glass added depth. The glass is surrounded by a layer of beading (with the exception of the bottom), that is interrupted in the upper corners by rosettes, all of which is enveloped by a thin molding. A repeating olive husk embellishes the raised edges of the frame, with a dangling floral margent on each side, affixed to the bottom of the upper corners by a hook. The highlight of the frame is a beautifully carved, scrolled console crest festooned with beading, a crinkle ribbon, and a rosette above a pair of crossed olive branches. Our painted French Napoleon III mirror can be placed in any bedroom of the house and could also be placed above a console in a hallway, grand foyer, or living room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition, with minor rubs to wooden frame. Light buildup to mirror with loss of silver, which is a desirable trait. Slight chip to upper left corner of glass, resulting in a minute separation from the frame (see detail photo). Minor losses with traces of old restoration.
