Late 18th Century Louis XVI Giltwood Sofa from Northern Italy

Description

Hand-carved in Northern Italy, in the style of Louis XVI, this giltwood sofa most likely dates to just after the reign of the King of France ended, placing its creation around the 1790s. All four legs are straight (a hallmark of the period), presenting as fluted and tapering blocks. The rest of the frame is roughly linear, except for the two graceful, out-swinging arms, which have been carved in baluster form. Both ends of the baluster are encompassed in foliate cups, and there is a ring of beading in the center of the rail. Sections of the gilding have been lost over the years, leaving exposed areas of the cream-colored gesso. The cushions (six in total) have been professionally reupholstered in white cotton with light blue piping. A beautiful 18th-century giltwood Italian sofa, this canape can sit three adults comfortably. It would be a welcomed addition to a landing, entry hall, or reading room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. The cushions have been professionally reupholstered in white cotton with light blue piping. Commensurate wear to frame, presenting as nicks, rubs, and paint losses. Some very light wood losses.
