Diminutive French Oak Buffet with Rouge Marble Top, Early 1900s

Description

Measuring only 26 inches wide, this French buffet is an ideal piece of furniture for areas where space is at a premium. Hand-carved from oak in the early 1900s, the finish has been stripped more recently, revealing tan-colored wood that provides a warm juxtaposition to the rouge marble top. The 1 ¼ inch thick rouge marble has gray, white, and black veining, with luscious quarter-round molding beneath a thin cavetto cornice. Both the marble top and the oak have been carved with subtle curves to the front and sides.

Full length iron hinges allow the two rectilinear doors to open, revealing an interior that still possesses the original dark brown finish and a full-length shelf. The front doors have been embellished with asymmetrical carvings that feature two different forms. A thick apron with multiple layers of molding wraps embraces the bottom, just above four block feet. Our diminutive oak and marble top buffet would make a great addition to a hallway, landing, or kitchen.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Light scratches to the marble top, with old restoration work. Minor rubs to one foot. The wood was stripped more recently, leaving traces of the original finish. Functional lock with key (replaced)
