Dating to the early 1900s, this set of eight dining chairs has been hand-carved in the Regence style with shell and foliate motifs, quite often seen on furniture of this period. The seats and backs (which are flat and rectilinear with a small crest) are caned, which was a process of weaving rattan vines into a latticework that first appeared during the Regence.

At the top of each chair is a carving of a scalloped shell and curled leaf crest over a lozenge-patterned diaper, all of which are hallmarks of Regence furniture. The ends of the top rail are round in the form of leafy volutes that terminate on the upper part of the side rails. A similar carving to the crest can be seen on the apron, with a more segmented shell beneath the arbalete edge of the seat. The legs have a subtle cabriole shape (the front legs are embellished with a roquillard) over pad feet and are connected by an X-shaped stretcher adorned with a rosette. Each seat is topped by a light green cushion, sewn in a lozenge pattern with tight whorls at each vertex, and secured around the back legs by tasseled ties. Our set of eight Regence-style caned chairs have been and lightly cerused more recently. The wood has a warm tan color with white accents and would make great additions to a dining or breakfast table.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with minor wear. Some light staining and discoloration to the green cushions (which are not present in all photos). Very light wear to the caned sections.
