Circa 1820 French Sleigh Bed and Chevet Side Table with Sycamore Inlay

Description

Dating to circa 1820, this beautiful sleigh bed and matching chevet side table were hand-carved during the French Restauration period. Both pieces have a wonderful spalted wood veneer (although the graining is more pronounced on the bed) that is a reddish brown with black graining. Additionally, they have a gold sycamore inlay of foliate rinceaux with Gothic rosettes, both of which are often seen on Restauration furniture. Every panel is also surrounded by a thin inlay border that adheres to the form of the wood, with the exception of the back sides, which were typically placed against the wall.

The bed, known as a lit bateau, has high-rising end posts that terminate in scrolls, which is a hallmark of a sleigh bed. A custom mattress is needed to fit the interior, which is 73 x 44 (inches), and with the roller feet, it would make a fantastic addition to a guest or children’s bedroom. The chevet, which has a gray marble top with white veining, could be used as a nightstand in the same room, or it could be used as a side table in just about any room of the house, such as in the bathroom, hallway, or living room. There is a belt drawer and two small shelves behind the door, with the uppermost shelf having a dark gray marble top with cream inclusions.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. The marble top of the chevet has an old repair with visible separations. The top shelf of the chevet has a marble top, which has light buildup. Minor nicks and fleabites to both the chevet and the sleigh bed. Light veneer losses and age separations to the bed. One corner of the bed has missing roller feet and a turn bolt, but the bed is solid.
