Beautifully Painted Antique Serpentine Commode from France, 19th Century

Description

This beautiful French commode from the 1800s has a supple serpentine form façade that is augmented by the hand-painted arabesque that graces each of the three drawers and the rectilinear sides. The curvaceous front is further highlighted by sinuous aprons and two small, scrolled feet in the front (the two back feet are shaped blocks). A thick overhanging quarter-round molding of the top follows the arbalete form of the drawers below. The entire case piece has been painted (more recently) in light bluish-gray with arabesque patterns in anthracite, and the neutral palette would work well with various shades of furniture. Each drawer has a pair of foliate brass handles flanking an asymmetrical leaf escutcheon. Our serpentine French commode would make a wonderful addition to any bedroom.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Light nicks and losses. The paint is more recent, with well-done intentional distress, presenting as rubs, losses, and craquelure. The hardware has also been added more recently. Three locks, all functional with distinct keys.
