Early 1800s Northern European Baroque Style Armoire in Painted Pine

Description

The intricacy of Baroque-style furnishings is on full display in the painted pine armoire from the early 1800s. Most likely hand-carved in Germany or one of the Scandinavian countries, the detailing of the moldings and pilasters is quite exquisite, and the segmented crown adds additional depth.

Two asymmetrically shaped doors swing open to reveal a split-level shelving system inside, complete with a single pull-out drawer that allows for storage of a variety of items. The interior wood has retained its raw, beige color, providing a warm juxtaposition to the light blue-gray exterior with gold accents. Five large rosettes adorn the crown, between two layers of thin molding. The center of the crown is slightly raised, with the protrusion continuing on the central mullion, the lower frieze, and the apron. Similarly, the angled shoulders slightly jut out, with the pilasters carved identically to the tapering mullion that is embellished with floral margents, volutes, and fluting. A floral husk border surrounds the two recessed panels of each door, separated by a drapery swag beneath a segmented roundel. Supported by three onion feet in the front and two more in the back, the stoutly Baroque-style armoire would make a wonderful case storage piece to any bedroom, living room, or entry hall.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Minor nicks and rubs. Old restoration and more recent work, including the addition of the painted finish. Functional lock with key.
