Description

This antique, painted three-drawer commode has a wonderful serpentine front, accented by angular barbs where the curves meet. Each drawer has a scalloped leaf keyplate flanked by a pair of bronze drop pulls, with the bronze hardware inset within painted cream panels (a rectangle surrounds the pulls, while an oval encircles the escutcheon).  The slightly overhanging top has quarter-round edges and mirrors the curvaceous shape of the drawers.  There is also a painted cream molding on the top that follows the prevailing form of the chest of drawers.  The sides are more linear, with deeply recessed rectangular panels adorned with cavetto molding and canted corners.

Originally hand-carved in Southern Germany in the 1700s, some of the sections have been replaced by more recent, yet still antique, pieces of wood.  The gray paint with cream panels is also more recent, and it has been intentionally distressed to present a more aged finish. Supported by four large, bun feet, our painted serpentine commode would be a wonderful addition to any bedroom.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition.  Very light age separations.  Old restoration work, including incorporating newer elements, yet still antique.  The painted finish is more recent, with intentional losses and rubs to add to the character of the commode.  Each drawer has a functional lock and a distinct key.
