Early 1900s French Butcher Shop Counter

Description

This hand-carved countertop dating to the early 1900s was originally from a French boucherie (butcher shop) and measures seven feet long.  The wood has a lovely tan color which gives a warmness and added depth to the carvings, most noticeably the recessed rectangular panels along the front façade and the sides. Also of note are the incredibly thick plinth that reaches to the floor and the supple ogee apron beneath the slightly overhanging top. The deep cavetto cornice under the top contains a pair of drawers, each with a brass drop handle, separated by a protruding fluted pilaster, also seen on the ends and sides of the belt. Each of these carvings aligns with a fluted column that terminates above the plinth. A pair of doors with a single brass pull grace the facing, lifting into the body of the counter to reveal additional storage space. Our French butcher shop counter can be used as a prep island in a kitchen or as a unique frontage to a bar area. At 30.25 inches tall, the counter can be used as is, but a custom marble or stone top would fit nicely.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Minor rubs and losses, specifically to the base. Please see photos.
