19th Century Yellow Glazed Fish Terrine from Alsace, France

SKU: CONSPA3 Category:

$1,200.00

Description

This yellow glazed fish terrine was handmade in the department of Alsace, France, in the 1800’s. More specifically, the earthenware fish poacher was produced in the commune of Soufflenheim, a small town about 3 miles from the German border (stamped on bottom). Soufflenheim is known for the large clay deposits from the nearby Rhine River, leading to over 50 pottery factories making their home in Cité des Potiers (“City of Potters”).

The lid is adorned with a low relief fish beneath a grooved handle. There are two smaller handles on the sides for handling purposes during service. It could once again be used to slow cook in an oven and/or be used as a serving dish.  Another use is to display it as a unique, colorful, and fun accessory for your kitchen.

CONDITION: Good antique condition, with wear commensurate to age and use, including minor rubs and buildup. Acceptable paint losses and light craquelure.  Sear marks on the underside of the terrine from previous use.
