Antique Louis XIV Style Gilt Bronze Fireplace Screen from France, 19th Century

$2,600.00

Description

During winter months, fireplace screens, such as this gilt bronze one, are positioned in front of a firebox to protect occupants and furniture of a sitting room from sparks and rolling logs.  In summer months, these same screens were often used as decorative elements, providing color and elegance to an otherwise drab fireplace.

Our ornate French fireplace screen (from the 1800s) has numerous motifs associated with the style of Louis XIV, such as the lion head affixed to the center of the mesh screen.  The mane is arranged in a manner that is reminiscent of a sunburst, which is appropriate, as Louis XIV was known as “The Sun King”.  A foliate border encircles the roughly circular mesh (canted “corners” interrupt the entirety of the circle), which is in turn surrounded by an elaborate rinceaux of overladen cornucopias, floral, and foliate margents.  There are even a pair of winged dragons in profile near the top, flanking a cherub mascaron on a scrolled console adorned with a scaled background and a feathered crown.  A pair of ovate hoops on the side allow this lovely gilt bronze firescreen portability, making it the perfect accessory for any fireplace.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition.  Commensurate wear, presenting as light buildup.
