19th Century French Polished Brass Ceremonial Wine Harvest Hotte

$1,300.00

Description

Hammered from the verso side, in a metalworking technique known as repousse, this polished brass wine harvest hotte has images that project, giving the ceremonial basket a subtle texture. The partial hood is adorned with a basket overflowing with fruit, while the main body depicts abundant cornucopias accompanying a large foliate rinceau. Continuous drapery swag hangs between the two sets of images, just beneath a lightly molded opening. A twisted rope encircles the bottom of the hotte, which is supported by an octagonal base embellished with raised roundels. Dating to the 1800s, this French wine harvest hotte would have been used as a decorative accessory for a vineyard or chateau wine room. It can also be used as an umbrella stand or for storing firekindling.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor buildup and discoloration in some areas. Light age separations to the base. Commensurate wear such as fleabites and indentations.
