The beautiful jade-colored marble of this French urn is accentuated by gilt bronze Neoclassical embellishments. Dating to circa 1885, the striking golden motifs are wine-centric, with a grape cluster finial and two depictions of the Greek god, Pan, each with a pair of horns extending above a grape leaf crown. The aforementioned finial is set within a leaf cup that arises from a bed of pinnate leaves arranged in a palmette at the top of the urn. A ring of banded fasces can be seen beneath this, inset within a deep recessed molding. The top of the main body is wrapped in a husked ring between two layers of beading, interrupted on opposing sides by Pan’s mascarons. Floral vines emanate from behind the satyr heads encircling the main body in a swag-like manner. The light green urn, which has darker green and cream marble inclusions, is supported by a square plinth with a thin border of gilding. Our Neoclassical marble and bronze urn would make a wonderful decorative accessory for a foyer center table or a living room mantel.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Fleabites to the marble. Light buildup to the bronze.
