It is rare to find a 19th-century tantalus box with a complete set of glassware, but this immaculate Black Forest-themed French cave a liqueur has all of the original receptacles, delicately etched with hunting motifs. Each of the 20 glasses (four decanters and 16 aperitifs) has a distinct hunting scene (see detailed photos), depicting fauna, vegetation, and members of a hunting party. When not in use, the glassware resides in a two-tiered caddy with floral pilasters in each corner that rise above two crenelated moldings and a center floral finial that serves as a handle.
The caddy is encased within four glass walls and surmounted by a faux bark top with a Black Forest crest of an adult and baby bird in a nest. Each of the glass walls is encircled by thick, raised cobblestone dormers, with the front one having a large leaf surrounding the keyhole. The carvings of our Black Forest cave a liqueur are of the highest quality, matched by the exquisite etching of the glassware. This would be a wonderful addition to any bar, study, or game room and can be used functionally as the lock can be activated.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Minor nicks and losses with light buildup. Slight woodworm damage. Functional lock with key. Original key and glassware are present.
