19th Century French Bas Relief Panel in Carved Walnut Wood

$3,400.00

Description

Hand-carved in bas relief during the mid 1800’s, this French walnut wood panel is in the Neoclassical style. The fantastic carvings portray the goddess, Athena, standing with a spear in her left hand and a plumed hoplite open-faced helmet on her head. Various weaponry and armory can be seen behind Athena and her two kneeling devotees that flank her. All three are clad in a chiton with a zoster wrapped around their upper torso. The helmet, spear, and clothing are all symbols of Athena and often used to depict her in art.

The trio of warriors are positioned beneath a strapwork arch that is topped by a winged gargoyle. Other elements in the frenetic scene include long-billed birds intertwined within the geometric entablature, caryatids that terminate in foliate rinceau, and fruit that is just out of reach of the birds’ mouths. The wood has developed a lovely patina that enhances all of the carvings. Our wonderful 19th century bas relief walnut panel can be displayed on the wall of just about any room in the house.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor nicks, rubs, and buildup. Light age separations and losses to the back side. Two eyelets in the back joined by a thin rope for hanging purposes. Please see photos for details.
