Originally from the 1960s, this magnificent French center or dining table was once part of the Claude Montana collection. The table has a half-inch thick circular glass top supported by four gilded swans on forest green plinths with a deep cavetto cornice. The four birds are displayed sitting on a foliate ground, with their wings addorsed (the details of the feathers are quite amazing), as if ready to take flight. Their necks curve upwards, providing contact points for supporting the glass. Additional support for the top is offered by the rectangular pillar that is surrounded by the golden birds. The pillar is mirrored, which enhances the beauty of the swans. Our gilded swan and glass table can be used as a center table in a grand foyer or as a dining room table.
Claude Montana was born in Paris in 1947 to a Spanish father and a German mother. Montana first gained acclaim by crafting papier-mâché jewelry covered in rhinestones, before becoming a leading fabricator of leather goods. At 29, Montana held his first fashion show, where his leather coats became popular. In the late 1970s, Montana ushered in a new era of fashion by incorporating large shoulder pads that would become the prevailing trend in the 1980s. Montana is affectionately known as “The King of the Shoulder Pad”.
CONDITION: Good condition. Minor buildup and light scratching to glass top and center pillar. Slight loss of gold leaf to swans. Commensurate fleabites and losses to swans, plinths, and center glass pillar. Old restoration and more recent touchups to plinths under swans.
