Supported by two thick limestone bases, this beautiful French table (from Paris) is topped by a 1 ¾ inch thick rouge de Languedoc marble. A hand-carved quarter-round edge, surrounding a thin cavetto molding, enhances the mottled appearance of the smooth marble. The quarries from which the striking red and white stone was extracted was once under the direct control of King Louis XIV. It was used extensively at Versailles, as a material for fireplace mantels, flooring, and architectural columns. The robust top is supported by two open lyre legs hand-carved in Parisian limestone, which are themselves over five inches thick. They rest on a rectangular plinth and are embellished with volutes and curled leaves on the sides, giving added elegance to the table. The light gray stone has areas of cream and white patina that pairs well with the vibrant marble top. Truly a one-of-a-kind marble and limestone table, it can be used in the dining room to accommodate up to eight guests.
