18th Century Verdure “Exotique” Wool and Silk Tapestry from Flanders

Description

Hand-woven in Flanders (part of modern-day Belgium) during the 1700s, this wool and silk tapestry features a thick canopy of trees outside of a walled city. This style of weaving, known for depicting lush, green vegetation, is called a verdure tapestry. The presence of tropical birds and striking flowers is typically referred to as an exotique tapestry.

Behind the rocky terrain that houses the trees, flowers, and birds is a small stream in front of a city wall. Multiple buildings can be seen scattered around a towering parapet. Further in the background are a few mountain peaks. The silk and wool fibers have maintained their lustrous colors, specifically the blue and green of the leaves, and the red flowers scattered throughout the forest. A thick foliate gold margent surrounds the scene, which is itself enveloped by thin red and blue borders. Our Flemish verdure exotique tapestry would make a wonderful addition to any wall in the house.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with light discoloration in some areas. Some areas have been rewoven to eliminate age separations, but some small ones are still present. A Velcro strip has been affixed to the verso for hanging purposes and a white backing was also added (there are some areas at the bottom where the backing has pulled away from the tapestry).
