18th Century Carved Oak Monastery Dining Table from France

Description

Dating to the 1700s, this monastery dining table was hand-carved in France using oak wood. The three-inch thick top (which is composed of three planks of wood) has undulations to the edges, which enhance the charm of the table. Supported by two well-carved baluster form pedestals, each on scrolled feet, the 8 2/3 foot long robust table is sturdy enough to support 8-10 guests for daily use. We have given the table a fresh coat of French wax, which has brought out the rich, brown patina. Tables such as this would have been used in the Middle Ages in monasteries (hence the name) as dining tables for the monks. Depending on the size of the monastery, multiple tables would often be placed throughout the dining hall. Our 18th century oak monastery table would make a fabulous addition to any dining room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Commensurate age separations, some of which have been filled. Other restoration work includes replaced sections of wood. Minor losses and hand-carved undulations to the edges of the top give additional character.
