17th Century French Oak and Iron Money Chest with Original Lock and Key

SKU: 224-10 Category:

$3,600.00

Description

Adorned by an impressive lattice of strapwork, this oak and iron money chest from 17th-century France is both functional and aesthetically appealing. An elaborate, stylized iron fleur de lys can be found in each corner of the lid, surrounded by decorative straps and two long straps that terminate as hasps on the front of the chest. There is a third strap that traverses the lid, ending just above the large, shaped escutcheon that is above a volute margent. Additional straps, most of which are short and non-functional can be seen on all sides, interspersed with longer, more purposeful iron strips and foliate brackets on the bottom corners. Each side has a drop handle that is affixed to one of the longer straps, allowing our 17th-century French money chest to be moved easily. It can be used in a bedroom for linens and blankets, in a bathroom for towels and/or toiletries, or in the living room as a decorative piece.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with minor losses and light age separations. There is an old fill to the interior. The lock is functional and comes with the original key.
