Description

In Medieval times, tapestries were often hung on the walls of castles or luxurious chateaus. These wall hangings not only provided rooms with vibrant artistic renderings, but they also functioned as insulation, helping to preserve a comfortable temperature in a sitting room. This French tapestry depicts a rich floral landscape, with the focal point being red drapery behind a Neoclassical pedestal with a golden urn adorned with gadroon and mascarons.

The cream-colored pedestal is partially obscured by flowering overgrowth, a yellow fabric hanging in the rear, and an overturned planter full of blue, yellow, and red flowers. Red drapery looms over the urn and pedestal, caught in the canopy of two large trees. A quiver of arrows and a strung bow can be seen on the ground, leaning against a stone wall with flowering vines spilling over the top. Behind the retaining wall, a river can be seen, carving its way through the hilly, tree-lined shores in the distance. The vibrant scene is set within a floral border consisting of multi-hued blooms with gold and ochre borders.

Placing an exact age on this tapestry is very difficult, but evidence leads us to conclude it is from the early or mid-1900s and would have been woven on a Jacquard loom. A pouch has been sewn into the verso side, functioning as a sleeve for the iron hanging rod with foliate finials that is included. Our rich French tapestry would make a beautiful addition to any wall of the house, from a hallway to a bedroom

CONDITION: Very good condition. Light discoloration to small areas. Some slight fraying to edges of the border.
