Entitled Lion du Senegal Sur Antilope (“Senegal Lion on Antelope”), this exceptionally striking and large bronze sculpture is by Edouard Delabrierre and dated 1866. The bronze has a beautiful verdigris coating that accentuates the details of the two animals. Notice the striations of the muscular lion as he pins the antelope to the textured ground. Areas of the sculpture have exposed bronze, adding a golden hue to the lovely turquoise patina. The two animals are presented on a thick oval plinth with a recessed molding, interrupted on the front side by a placard that reads “Lion du Senegal Sur Antilope Exposition 1866 No 2721”, indicating that Delabrierre exhibited the sculpture in 1866. A signature reading “E. Delabrierre” can be seen on the ground, just in front of the lion’s hindquarters.
Paul-Édouard Delabrièrre was born in 1829 in Paris. Originally studying to become a painter under Jean-Baptiste Delestre, Delabrierre began to exhibit his sculptures in 1848. Delabrierre was known to sculpt in wax, plaster, and terra cotta, but his most respected works were his detailed bronzes. One of the most prominent animaliers of the 19th century, Delabrierre’s most important piece is L’Equitation, which adorns the façade of the Louvre in Paris.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. The bronze has a wonderful coating of verdigris, with some exposed areas revealing the original bronze hue. Signed “E. Delabrierre” on the ground.
