Pair of 18th Century Silvered Red Copper Candlesticks from France

$2,800.00

Description

At over three feet tall, this pair of silvered copper candlesticks would make impressive decorative accessories. Dating to the 1700s, these French candlesticks have a unique patination due to losses of the silvering, with areas that have a fiery red hue. Motifs seen on the candlesticks, such as the tripartite bases with volute feet, indicate that they are from the period of Louis XIV. A beaded cabochon can be seen in between each foot, with additional elements of foliage, fluting, and florets. The undulating shafts are adorned with gadroon, beading, leaf cups, swags, and additional florets and fluting. Each candlestick is topped by a large circular and fluted bobeche with a leaf cup base. These tall, silvered candlesticks are eye-catching due to their massive presence, palette, and well-worked décor. They could be used functionally as candlesticks, although most collectors will find more benefit in using them as decorative accessories on a console or sofa table. More recently, they had been converted to lamps and could be used in such a manner, after being rewired.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Commensurate wear including buildup, fleabites, and indentations. Losses to the finish have exposed copper undertones. The candlesticks were converted to lamps at some point, based on the presence of old sockets and wiring.
