Hand-carved in Italian limestone, this dolphin fountain element is reminiscent of the grotesque dolphins used by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in creating the base of his Fontana del Tritone (Triton fountain) in 1642. Like Bernini’s dolphins (his fountain had four clustered together), our dolphin’s tail rises upwards, high above the head, topped by a tripartite fin. The body is highly detailed, with numerous deviated scales surrounding the more traditional plated scales, which can also be seen on the backside. A small aperture has been carved into the mouth, allowing our limestone dolphin to be used as a fountain element for a pool, fountain, or pond.

CONDITION: Very good condition. Light rubs. A local stone carver strengthened the tail, which had a small loss. Limestone is a natural material that can change color with exposure to the elements. Please contact us for a photo of the current patina.
