Description

Open lyre legs and fretted stretchers are hallmarks of demi-lune consoles from the Piedmont region of Italy, as seen on this pair of walnut tables dating to the 1700s. The curvaceous legs with scrolled feet are enhanced by the sinuous stretcher whose connectors are set askew. They would make fantastic additions to a hallway, entry, or living room.

Later modifications to the consoles also allow them to function as the ends of a curved dining table. Carved mortises have been affixed to the back side of each console, providing sleeves for a pair of cross supports that connect the consoles. Additionally, a pair of table leaves with interlocking tongues and grooves fit directly onto the supports, completing the dining tabletop. All four sections are further secured by a series of eyelets and latches that have been installed to the undersides. The result is a uniquely, but well-engineered dining or breakfast room table that can seat six adults comfortably.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor nicks and commensurate losses. Light traces of old wood worm and age separations, which necessitated old fills and replacements. The two leaves, cross supports, and mortise/tenons were added more recently, allowing the consoles to serves as ends to a dining table.  The leaves are not walnut and are most likely Italian larch or pine.
