A very charming limestone fountain from France, this single-pillar fountain has a side-mounted basin that acts as a spill bowl into the larger rectangular basin. Consisting of 11 pieces of individually carved limestone sections, the pillar rises above the back wall of the basin. A pair of iron bars extend from the pillar to the front wall of the basin. Centuries ago, bars such as these would have been used to support containers as villagers gathered water for household use. The pillar is embellished by subtle chamfered edges and a pyramidical finial above a square entablature with cavetto molding. An iron spout with a large rosette backplate extends from the column above the basin, while a second spout with a smaller rosette runs from the right side of the column, positioned over a small rectangular spill basin. This second basin contains a third iron spout, also positioned over the main basin. The result is a unique cascade of water that will make a pleasing auditory sound to a garden or courtyard.
CONDITION: Very good condition. Intentional distress marks. Limestone is a natural material that can change color with exposure to the elements. Some oxidation to the iron bars, spouts, and rosettes.
