A fantastic landscape painting of a bow and arrow hunter tracking a falcon at dusk, this grand piece of art (~6 feet wide) by Étienne Duval is presented in a fluted and foliate giltwood frame. Duval did a fantastic job of depicting a setting sun, as the darkening sky is a dim yellow with traces of pink and orange, and gray clouds filling the horizon. Mountains can be seen in the distance, on the far shore of a body of water that terminates on a rocky incline of a cliff. Sparse green vegetation is mainly centered around a large tree that conceals a hunter aiming his bow at a single falcon soaring high into the sky.
Etienne Duval was born in Switzerland in 1824 and studied under Diday. Known for his landscape paintings, Duval took several trips to Egypt to study the country’s vast topography. Many of these sights were incorporated in Duval’s paintings, as evidenced by our Falcon Hunter painting, where the hunter and the falcon are reduced in importance when compared to the innate beauty of the landscape.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Minor nicks and rubs to the frame. Very light craquelure to the canvas. Signed in lower right corner: “E Duval”.
