Cast in the 1800s in the Medieval style, this robust French iron fireback features thick horizontal, lapped plates that comprise the fireplace accessory. The fireback is roughly rectangular, with an arched top that softens the linear form. A pair of textured, large iron rings can be seen near the top of the slightly raised vertical plates that make up the edges of the fireback. They are pinned in place by a series of large rivets, which were also used to keep the lapped plates together. The side borders are gently embellished with a series of chevrons, which were often seen on Medieval heraldic elements. Some areas of oxidation are present, but as a whole, the fireback has a rich, black patina. Our Medieval-style fireback would make a wonderful addition to any fireplace. It can also be inset into a wall, making a unique kitchen backsplash.
CONDITION: Very good condition. Commensurate wear, presenting as faded elements, fleabites, and oxidation.
