This French winter landscape painting from the 1800’s sits securely in the original giltwood frame. The hand-carved frame has several long ribbons, with sinuous fabric curls encompassing a repeating border of two distinct flowers. A slender cavetto molding can be seen inside of the carvings, with a repeating scalloped leaf motif that immediately borders the canvas.
The French School painting depicts an overcast winter day with a small patch of blue sky in the middle of gray clouds above snowcapped mountains. Most likely the French Alps, there are a few evergreen trees behind a wood house with a small pond in front. Three figures can be seen walking through the snow towards a steepled building, which is most likely a countryside church. Our quaint 19th century French winter landscape painting can be hung in any room of the house.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with acceptable craquelure to canvas. Minor age separations to giltwood frame (which is original) with old touchups. Eyelet in back for hanging purposes.
