This oil on board pastoral painting of two cattle is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner “F.J. Dierckxsens 1858”. There is also a handwritten paper affixed to the verso side of the frame with the same information, although the surname has been misspelled. Dierckxsens was born in the Netherlands.
The main subjects of Dierckxsens’ painting are a pair of bovines in a grassy expanse near a body of water. A light brown colored cow lays in the grass beneath a large tree. Standing next to her is a cream-colored bull with tipped horns and a collar around his neck. To their right is a felled log and some vegetation, including a large flowering plant with prickled leaves. On the other side is the edge of a pond with two ducks floating in the water. There are many sights in the background, including a flock of sheep, a windmill, and a steeple beneath a blue sky with large white clouds.
A detailed giltwood frame surrounds the painting, with a foliate and floral carving in each corner. There is a textured central border of gold arabesque, with a repeating foliate motif along the edge of the painting. Our Dutch oil on board painting of cattle will be an asset to any area it is placed.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with light age separations, losses, and repairs to frame. Minor craquelure of paint. The painting has been professionally touched up. Wired in the back for hanging purposes.
