Pair of French Candelabra Lamps made from Hand Wrought Iron and Antique Elements

SKU: 321-74 Category:

$4,600.00

Description

Made from hand wrought iron and repurposed antique elements, this pair of French candelabra lamps has a total of six sockets and a total height of 38 inches. The light of the central column rises above the surrounding lights atop the five curled arms. All sockets sit in scalloped bobeches.

The wrought iron ornamentation rises from within the hand-carved wooden bases.  These bases are antique elements known as “pots a feu”, or “fire pots”, which are finials in the shape of flames.  This design motif was originally seen as carved stone elements placed on roofs of buildings in 17th century France.  Later centuries would see the flaming finial used as decorative items in everything from art to furniture to garden items.  Our pots feu have been whitewashed (traces of the original finish can still be seen) and mounted on contemporary square iron plinths that have been painted black.

All of the ironwork  surrounding the central column has been hand wrought, hammered, and patinated in black with traces of a dark brass coloration. This stunning pair of French candelabra lamps have been wired for use in North American homes. They would make great table lamps in a variety of home styles.

CONDITION: Wear commensurate to age and use with minor losses and age separations. Old fills to one pot au feu. The wrought iron was added more recently, with oxidation and rubs to paint and to the plinths. Pots au feu bases have slightly different carvings. Please see photos for details.
