This antique silver gilt wooden book holder, or table lectern, is from Italy and dates to the latter half of the 1800s. It is all carved wood, with a layer of gesso, some old silver leaf and touches of silver gilt paint. There are beautifully carved motifs of curling acanthus leaves and scrolls on the front and sides, while a hinged support with several notches allows you to lock the display into multiple viewing angles. Unlike other decorative book stands whose carvings and decor are hidden when a book is rested upon it, this lectern holds a book while still allowing for all of the decorative elements to be seen. Wonderful for displaying books, a Bible, or antique papers, this elegant Italian table lectern will highlight any surface it’s placed upon.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with some losses to finish as seen in photos. Old silver gilt paint added in areas.
