Description

Known as an encoignure in France (literally “corner”), this corner buffet was hand-carved in Provence, circa 1900. First seen during the reign of Louis XV, encoignures were light, full of movement, and highly practical.  The top, which has a thin molding along the visible sides, has curvaceous ends and a shaped middle section. Beneath the overhanging top are foliate and floral branches that taper in as the carvings approach the center. The two-tiered open front has an arbalete top with a floret center flanked by a pair of small foliate twigs.

Flanking the opening is a pair of asymmetrically shaped doors on iron hinges that open to reveal two compartments.  The left is shelved, while the right compartment is used for storing larger items (shelf removed). The center panels of both doors are asymmetrical with arbalete moldings on all four sides. A highly shaped apron, comprised of volute scrolls, is adorned on the front side with sprawling foliate and floral margents. The curvaceousness continues to the four front legs, which are small cabrioles with volute terminals above pad feet, while the back four are blocked.

A unique and functional piece, our Louis XV style corner buffet from Provence can be used with many style interiors. The cabinet was constructed using a combination of walnut and walnut veneer, which has been recently waxed and buffed.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with wear commensurate to age and use, including minor nicks, rubs, and old minor repairs. Doors stay closed via magnet. Originally a two-bodied cabinet, the upper section pegged into the top of the buffet; the dowel holes have been filled.
