The Winged Lion of Venice in Carved Giallo Reale Marble

$4,900.00

Description

According to ancient Venetian tradition, when Mark the Evangelist was traveling through Europe, he stopped at a lagoon in Venice. While at the watering hole, an angel appeared to Mark and uttered the phrase Pax tibi Marce, evangelista meus (“Peace to you Mark, my evangelist”). The same phrase can be seen inscribed on an open book in our winged lion of Venice marble plaque.

The winged lion, both the symbol of Mark and subsequently Venice, has been carved from giallo reale marble, which is a golden hued marble found in Italy. Our lion has his right forepaw on the Latin book and is depicted with a three-quarter profile face and wings addorsed with only the left one visible. On either side of the lion is a single column, also carved in giallo reale. The remaining space has been filled with applied pieces of ultramarine and white veined stone. Three lines of fluting appear above each column, flanking a thin inlaid black and white checkerboard veneer.

Venice is known for having the largest number of sculptural, artistic, and architectural representations of a lion in the world. A unique take on the winged lion of Venice, our marble plaque is full of color with a texture that appears as if it dates from antiquity. Pair this with a stand to display on a table or ledge. It could also be inset into a wall and used as a decorative architectural.

CONDITION: Good condition with light buildup and fleabites. Intentional excavation to mimic antiquity. Slight age separations to applied stone.
