This pair of candlesticks was produced in France in the 1700’s. Unlike most antique wooden candlesticks, these were made to display the skill of the carver, therefore they remain in their natural color (possibly Maple wood).  There is no gesso or gilding. The finely detailed columns stand on tripartite bases and were completely carved by hand on all sides. Each of the columns is topped with an iron bobeche that has scalloped edges, a capital with recessed channels, and a roughly two-inch-tall pricket (although one pricket has been broken).

Immediately beneath the iron cup is a sinuous carving with curled edges and a fluted background. The column below is shaped with a few bulbous protrusions. Decorative motifs of the column include geometric shapes, trefoils surrounded by fluted borders, C-scrolls and beading.

Beneath several layers of gadrooned leaves, the column transitions into a tripartite base with scrolled feet. The interior of each foot has been embellished with a curled leaf that has fluting. In between the leaves is a central cartouche comprised of two C-scrolls facing each other. The scrolled medallion is surrounded by a fluted and floral border.

Our pair of finely carved 18th century French candlesticks would make a great addition to a fireplace mantle or a side or center table. The candlesticks can still be used to hold candles, but they could also be wired to make small lamps.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with wear commensurate to age and use, including minor losses and fleabites to wood. Buildup to the iron elements with minor losses to the capitals. One pricket has been broken. Please see photos for details.
