From Italy, this small antique walnut wood cabinet is in the Renaissance style and dates to the late 1800’s. There are some particularly interesting motifs on this piece. Notice the two emblems at the top of the pilasters. They are in a stylized cartouche with a marital attribute of hearts. The shape of this cabinet is referred to as a madie or madia. These were originally used as bread boxes in the 17th century, and they were usually larger than this. This smaller convenient size can be used in a variety of locations in the home.
CONDITION: Good overall condition with some age separations, nicks, and minor losses. Dummy key used to open door does not operate lock. Traces of old wood worm.
