The motifs on this small French brass jardiniere from the late 1800s were hammered from the verso side in a technique known as repousse. This method enhances the visual appearance while also giving the jardiniere some texture.
Its slightly rolled rim boasts graceful spiral fluting, while the tall neck is adorned with a foliate arabesque ring. The gadrooned body rests gracefully on tripartite monopodial paw feet, mirroring the majestic lion mascaron mounts on each side. Twisted loop handles accentuate the portability of this elegant jardiniere or cachepot, allowing a potted plant placed inside to be moved throughout the house.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor cavitations to the main body. Buildup and verdigris to interior, commensurate with age and use. Old restoration to one handle and lion.
