Hand-carved in oak, circa 1890, this pair of French oak wall panels have foliate motifs. A slightly rounded, thick outer border is adorned with repeating partial leaves, while the central raised cartouche consists of twisting leaves flanking a scrolled console with a cabochon. A thin molding surrounds the meandering vines, which are wrapped around a horizontal bar that extends from the console.
Based on the variance in the dimensions and the presence of mortises along the sides of each panel, it can be assumed that they were once part of a larger piece of furniture or installation. The wood had been bleached at some point, allowing the wood grains to gain prominence. Our bleached oak panels can be displayed on a wall either vertically or horizontally, making for versatile decorative architecturals.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. The panels were most likely repurposed from a piece of furniture carved in the late 19th century (most likely bleached at a later point in time). Minor nicks and rubs with light buildup. Mortises can be seen on the sides, which show how the panels would have been incorporated into the piece of furniture.
