Produced by a master craftsman, this unique French enfilade was hand-carved in oak and has a beautiful 1 ¼ inch black marble top with white and gray veining. At some point in its history, this piece was stripped, revealing natural grain patterns as well as highly detailed carvings and thick moldings.
An enfilade is typically known as a French buffet that has more than two doors. Our enfilade has three highly carved doors with sinuous brass escutcheons (the locks are functioning and comes with two keys). The doors open on iron hinges to reveal a beautiful full-length arbalete (bow shaped) shelf. This attention to detail is not often seen on such pieces. The outer doors are asymmetrically shaped with recessed panels, but symmetrical in terms of composition. The symmetrical middle door has an arbalete upper molding surrounding another recessed panel. All three doors have highly shaped moldings, with scrolls and floral margents between the molding and the recessed areas. Directly above the doors are three 19-inch drawers with brass pulls. Just like the carvings on the doors, the scrolled and floral motifs are asymmetrical, but symmetric in terms of arrangement. The entire piece is topped by a deep black marble with elegant quarter round molding (possibly Nero Marquina marble from Spain).
The aprons on the front and sides flare out slightly, magnifying the curvaceous carvings throughout the buffet. They are festooned with rococo style carvings, such as shells, gadrooned leaves, and a pebble surrounded by rinceaux of curled leaves. The buffet sits on imposing block feet in the front and back. The front feet have been embellished with curled acanthus leaves.
In between the marble top and the drawers is an unusual 11 ¼ x 56 ½ pullout shelf. The shelf would have been used during meals as an additional serving area or as a bread tray. This intricately carved stripped oak French enfilade makes an immediate visual impact and has several interesting details which are not often seen. It will make a great statement piece for any dining or breakfast room.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with age separations and scratches to marble top. Traces of original finish can still be seen in some areas. Natural color variations to wood.
