This magnificent 17th century French tapestry chair back panel with needlepoint border has most likely outlived the original wooden frame it was made for. The central scene depicts a garden setting with a body of water, a large medici urn, and maybe some chateaux in the distant background. A maiden sits beneath a large tree between a cherub holding a basket of flowers and an angel with peacock wings. This scene is bordered by needlepoint patterns of c-scroll acanthus leaves and florets. The cut outs on the sides of the panel fit over the arms of the chair.
Suitable for a host or hostess arm chair back panel this magnificent antique tapestry and needlepoint armchair back panel will be a collector’s piece.
