Description

This rare carved and pierced oak Renaissance panel was likely hand carved in the mid to late 1500’s in central Europe (most likely Germany or Northern Italy). The roughly 5 ¾ foot long panel has been carved on both the front and back, indicating that the woodcarver who produced the piece was extremely skilled and had intended for it to be viewed from both sides.  Pieces such as this were likely inspired by the great carved masterpieces which were created 50 to 100 years earlier in Southern Germany.  There were some truly magnificent wooden carvings created during this era, more often altar pieces for monasteries and cathedrals, many of which are still standing today.

In the center of the carving seen here, is a nude putto standing amongst large foliate rinceaux. The highly carved vegetation also features flowers, curled leaves, volute scrolls, and fruit. Various animals are scattered throughout the vegetation, including a squirrel and a bird confronting each other over a piece of fruit and a fox tracking a nest of owls. The entire scene is surrounded by a thick cavetto molding with some of the leafy elements extending beyond the border.  Everything is carved from the thickness of the wood (not applique), seamlessly blending and transitioning from one motif to another, leaves curling over the frame, animals partly hidden by foliage, etc. The wood itself is a European Oak with its original warm coloration.  Oak, being a hardwood is much more difficult to carve than softer woods such as lime or walnut, which makes this piece even more impressive.

Eyelets have been installed on the back side for hanging purposes, however a custom acrylic wall mount has been paired with the carving for optimal viewing pleasure. The thick acrylic base, which has several layers of molding, has a recessed channel that the panel slots into. Two acrylic brackets cradle the base and would be mounted to the wall, allowing the panel to sit comfortably away from the wall. When fully installed, the 16th century carved oak Renaissance panel makes a fantastic statement piece in any room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor nicks, losses, and buildup to wood. Light age separations and shrinkage to wood. Old repairs are visible. The acryclic base and wall mounts are more recent additions from a custom order. Eyelets also installed in the back for installation without the acrylic pieces. Please see photos for details.
