A grand demi-lune buffet from the period of Louis XVI, this French sideboard was hand-carved circa 1780, using a combination of mahogany and lemonwood. Topped by a one-inch thick gray Saint Anne marble, the buffet has a wonderful, warm palette. The marble top, which also has black and light gray veining, has been hand-carved with a thin cavetto cornice and protruding moldings that align with the six large pilaster legs. Each of the legs resembles an ebonized column, with golden fluting and rings of bronze dore. Long toupie feet, also encircled in bronze, add a touch of style, while also stabilizing the buffet. A long belt drawer tops the double doors of the center section, which open to reveal a single shelf. Similarly, a wedge-shaped drawer aligns over each of the side compartments that also feature a single shelf. The wood has a beautiful mixture of honey and brown hues and is enhanced by some striking graining. Our period Louis XVI demi-lune buffet would make an eye-catching storage piece for an entryway, dining room, or living room.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor rubs and age separations to the main body, with fleabites and light scratches to the marble top. Slight discoloration to some areas of the marble. Old restoration work, including repairing a break to the marble. More recent restoration, which includes the magnetization of one door (six locks, each with their own key, but one lock does not operate). Some minute sections of moldings are missing or have small nicks.
