These fabulous and highly detailed, hand forged iron and bronze andirons come from northern Belgium. They feature wonderful demi-motifs of iron dragons, complete with incised details depicting feathers, ears, eyes, etc. The tops of each andiron have round bronze ornamentation with gadrooned lobes around the bronze base. A series of splayed acanthus leaves are directly beneath the lobes and four S-scrolls are on either side of the center posts. There is more incised ornamentation along each post.
All this rests upon decorated half circles that have incised animal feet on both sides of each post. Inside the half circle are two C-scrolls, meeting to form an inverted Fleur-de-Lis at the center. The back bars are twist turned with C-scrolls above and beneath. These highly decorative and unusual antique andirons previously graced a fireplace at the Chateau de Schoten in Antwerp, Belgium.
CONDITION: Rusting to iron, wear to motifs commensurate with use and age.
