These fantastic panel paintings, measuring over 100 inches tall, most recently came from a villa in Siena, Italy. They are Grisaille, which is a French term meaning a painting executed almost entirely in shades of grey and white. Painted motifs include beautiful scrolling floral, foliate and figural motifs throughout. The main subjects are ornate urns, upheld by two female demi figures, each urn overflowing with scrolling foliation and garlands of flowers. Above each urn, framed by large acanthus scrolls, are hanging flower baskets, and beneath each of the demi-figures, are large foliate C-scrolls with delicate vines growing upwards. Each panel has a small painted border.
Each painting may have originally been incorporated into a large paneled room in Italy (as evidenced by dowels on tops of stretchers). This pair of large scale Neoclassical works of art will make quite an impression in any home!
CONDITION: Good overall antique condition with surface buildup, some losses to paint, minor denting to canvas, and some fraying to edges of canvases as seen in photos.
