Club chairs, which are armchairs completely covered in leather, first appeared in France at the beginning of the 20th century. Originally called fauteuil comfortable (“comfortable armchairs”), authentic club chairs are covered in sheepskin leather. As part of the tanning process, defects of the skin are visible through the dye, giving every chair a unique pattern. In the case of our pair, the golden-brown leather has been affixed to the frame by numerous metal nailheads, which are visible on the back side of each chair. The backs have slightly arching tops known as “gendarme’s hat” and large, round armrests that rest on top of block feet.
Our large leather club chairs are from France, circa 1950. Over the years, the leather has aged, developing a lovely warm patina that allows the chairs to be placed in a variety of rooms throughout the house. They can be placed together or used separately in different rooms, but either way, they will provide a comfortable and authentic statement piece.
CONDITION: Good condition with wear commensurate to age and use. Some scuffing and chapping as seen in photos. Section of piping missing from front edge of one seat.
