A very realistic rendering of a tower of fruit, this pair of creamware topiaries was produced in Italy during the 1960s. Creamware is a unique type of earthenware that is fired at lower temperatures (around 800 Celsius) than most other pottery, then glazed with lead, leading to a creamy, high-gloss finish. You might notice a lack of craquelure to the pottery; this was accomplished by adding flintstone to the glaze, which helps to prevent crazing.
Each topiary has a removable lid that consists of stacked fruit, such as grapes, pears, apples, and bananas, some depicted with leaves still attached. The bowls are adorned with a pierced, repeating geometric motif around the opening, just above a subtly molded circular base.
These Italian creamware topiaries, with their fruit motifs can be displayed in a living room or dining room as decorative objects on a center table or console. Their neutral color allows them to work with nearly any interior design.
CONDITION: Good condition with light buildup and fleabites. Presence of old touch-ups, but there are still visible and minor glaze cracks, commensurate to age and handling. Please see photos for details.
